Speaking of Atami, the 1st thing comes out to your mind will be aprotagonists couple “Kanichi and Omiya” appearing in novel “Devil of Gold” (Kon-jiki-Yasha) pls “Omiya’s Pinetree”.
This place is a popular spot for memorial shot along the national highway and the shore as well, many people come.

The first “Pine of Omiya” was called “the pine of an angel robe” in the early days of the Showa era, but the author’s pupil Koyo Ozaki built a monument to commemorate the novel “Devil of Gold” in a same place in August 1919 and “Pine of Omiya” became its common name. The haiku inscribed on stone goes like : “Spring moonlight manfests your back, on some passer-by’s back, my dear Omiya. Ever since then it came to be called “Pine of Omiya”.

However, after some typhoon attack and adjustment for road constructions the half of the tree had cut off, it was weakened and suffering from traffic pollution and tarmac so that it didn’t survive long. At last planted anew as the second generation on November 17, 1966. (donated by “Atami Hotel”)

Unfortunately the second pine showed same kinds of symptom such as faded leaf color, dead branches and dieback under the influence of the exhaust gas of traffic or tarmac roads Atami cityhall worked out for its activation plan of three years from 1998.
“New Omiya’s Pine” was moved to carefree assorted ground which is a bit higher than before with spearflowers and Japanese silverleaves, a Nippon chrysanthemums and a native rock has posted next to the treein order to design a Japanese garden-style and pretty much done the makeover.

On January 17, 1986, Atami Rotary Club built the bronze statue (made by Tateno Kousei).
