Konjiki Yasha (the Golden Demon) by Koyo Ozaki is a masterpiece first published on the Yomiuri Shimbun at the year of 1897, which attracted many readers in the times of the Meiji.

Kanichi Hazama and Miya Shigisawa are engaged. But Miya was urged to marry a businessman by the will of her parents, Kanichi felt betrayed by this decision and on Jan 17th, he said goodbye to Miya tearfully and ended their relationship at the coast of Atami. (People afterwards called this place “The Place of Atami coast”, and the pine tree stood beside the couple became famous as “the Tree of Miya”. Many tourists from all the country visit the Tree of Miya since then.)

After Miya married the businessman, Kanich devoted all of his time making money in order to get rich. Miya also felt depressed because of her betray toward Kanichi.

People in those days were fascinated by the couple’s story just like people of today fascinated by the TV dramas. The coast of Atami, the place which separated the couple had become a famous sight-seeing attraction afterwards. Now, the story had been filmed and made into movies for many times.

Koyo Ozaki, the author of Through Konjiki Yasha (The Golden Demon) had made Atami had a well-know place for people all around Japan through his novel. In order to remembering his great achievement, the “Koyo Ozaki Festival and Fudedsuka Koyo Festival” is being held on Jan 17th every year.

On Friday, Jan 17 of 2014, “Fudedsuka Koyo Festival” will be held at the Pen Mound located in front of the Yuyado Ichibanchi, which enshrining the favorite pen ever used by Koyo Ozaki start from 11:00 a.m. There will be Shinto ritual.

After that, the “Koyo Ozaki Festival” will be held at The Pine Tree of Miya start from 12:30.

During the ceremony, speeches and floral tribute from the descendants of Ozaki and other person related to him are expected. After the ceremony, there will be a short skit performed by the Atami Geigiren, featuring famous scenes from Konjiki Yasha, the scene of tearful farewell of Kanichi and Miya, and the scene of Kanichi treat Miya cruelly.

There will be a special memorial performing event at the Atami Geigi Kenban start from 13:00 the year, so please come come and enjoy the show.
