Kitagawa Utamaro Special Exhibition “Fukakawa no yuki (Fukagawa in the Snow)” at Okada Museum of Art

Display special in 20140407_ Okada Museum, Utamaro "snow now being held of Fukagawa"
“Fukagawa no yuki (Fukagawa in the Snow)” along with “Shinagawa no tsuiki (Moon of Shinagawa, a collection of Freer Gallery of Art in the U.S.)” and “Yoshihara no hana (Flowers of Yoshihara, a collection of Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in the U.S.)” are well known as the masterpiece of Kigagawa Utamaro’s trilogy of “Setsu Getsu Ka (the snow, the moon and the flowers).”

The artwork has a stunning large size that is 199 cm in height and 341 cm in wide.

The whole size of the painting is so large comparing to a normal size hanging scroll type painting. There are 27 human figures in total vividly portrayed in the painting, showed the everlasting talent of Utamaro in his old years as well as the true value of his works.

The painting of “Fukakawa no yuki” had long been missing in the past, it is said to be a work painted during the period of Utamaro’s stay at Tochigi. It is the first special exhibition in 66 years since the last one.

Take a Tokkyu Romance Car (Express Train) from Shinjuku Station > Get off at Hakone-yumoto Station (Approx. 90 minutes.)
1: Take a Izu-Hakone Bus or a Hakone Tozan Bus for Kowakien for approx. 20 minutes.
2: Take a train of Hakone Tozan Railway and get off at Kowakidani Station for approx. 35 minutes. > Take a Izu-Hakone Bus or a Hakone Tozan Bus for Kowakien for approx. 2 minutes.JR Line
Take a Shinkansen train (Kodama) from Tokyo Station > Get off at Odawara Station (for approx. 35 minutes)
Take a Izu-Hakone Bus or a Hakone Tozan Bus for Kowakien for approx. 40 minutes.
By car
Tomei Expressway Atsugi IC > Odawara-Atsugi Expressway > Hakoneguchi IC > National Road No. 1 > Okada Museum of Art (approx. 60 minutes)
