The 75th Black Ship Festival

It feels like Shimoda area time slipped to the Bakumatsu period.

Back to the year of 1854, in complying with the Convention of Peace and Amity between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan, the U.S. Navy led by Admiral Perry reached Shimoda area which was then a port for sailboat to catch the wind.

It was an event triggered Japan’s end of its seclusion policy and its entry of modern age. The Black Ship Festival started in 1934 in remembering the great achievement of Perry and for continued contribution to international goodwill.

There will be ceremony and memorial service in front of grave with due solemnity as well as various exciting events held at the seaside and inside the town.

It is the largest event in Shimoda City, hold in a season of fresh green with the Namako wall and the contrast made of Navy troop’s black and white theme colors.

・Memorial ceremony at Shimoda Park

・Parade at the main street of the city
・Theatrical performance Conclusion of Shimoda Treaty at Ryosen-ji Temple
・Kimono Fashion Show at Ryosen-ji Temple
・Black Ship Ondou Performance
・Izu Shirahama Taiko Performance
・Black Ship Sunset Concert at the large hall of Community Center.

・KAIKOKU Open Market at various street malls

・Nigiwai Parade at the main street of the city
・Theatrical performance Conclusion of Shimoda Treaty at the parking lot of Community Center

Getting there By train
From Tokyo Station take a “Ltd. Exp Odoriko” or “Super View Odoriko” of Jr Line, get off at the terminal station Izukyu Shimoda Station, duration is about 3 hours.By car
From Tokyo Station to Toumei-Atsuigi -> Odawara -> Route 135 -> Kawazu -> Shimoda. > > > >
3 hour driving from Tomei-Atsuigi Interchange will bring you joy of viewing the beautiful scenery along East Coast of Izu.

* Traffic jams are expected around Shimoda Station during the period of Kurofune Festival.
