Treat your eyes with beautiful sight from approximately 150,000 hydrangea flowers, blooming at Shimoda Park, located at the southern part of Izu. Approximately 81 acre (100,000 tsubo) park full with gorgeous flowers awaits you!

Shimoda Garden

In Japanese language, Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) is “Ajisai”. From the end of May and June, the hydrangea are in perfect time to enjoy. You will see them blooming everywhere in Japan. Many people plant hydrangea at their garden, but it will be more beautiful if you take your time to visit hydrangea garden at Izu Shimoda.

I went to this place last time for the Black Ship festival. This time I came back for the hydrangea garden! The festival are held from 1st until 30th June.

You can walk to the garden from Izukyu Shimoda station approximately 15~20 minutes. You will pass some temples and also Perry road while walking to the garden. Here are some pictures I took from Perry road where the hydrangea are blooming alongside the road.

At the end of Perry road there is a sign that point out the way to the hydrangea garden. When you reach the sign, you will need to climb up stairs… and more stairs… (yes it was pretty high) and you will reach the bottom part of the garden.

Climb more stairs and we will enter the blooming hydrangea garden! White, pink, blue, and purple hydrangea blend with the green leaves and the smell of rain. I was amazed by the amazing view. When I went over there it slightly raining and the water drops at the flowers makes it more beautiful! Here are some photos from the garden.

View From the Top

I recommend you to climb to the top of the hill. It needs more effort indeed. But it will worth your extra sweat once you reach the top! From the top of the hill you can get the full view of the garden and also the sea with mountains in the distance. It was cloudy and raining slightly when I went there so the mountains are covered with fog. As a person who loves rain, the cool weather and the sight is just misteriously beautiful for me!

One more benefit if you climb to the top is that not much people climb to the top. So you can really enjoy a quality time with yourself and hearing the sound of nature.

A tips from me, before you go the hydrangea garden, stop at any store or convenience store and buy some food and drink. I did’t think the climb will be pretty high… I was lucky I brought water but I didn’t bring any food to enjoy at the hilltop.
